Under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Dr. B.N. Rangappa and the team of Tunga Vidyavardhaka Sangha ®, the thriving journey of the college commenced in the year 1967 in Thirthahalli at the foothills of Anandagiri — the result of the prolific and admirable efforts of an association of philanthropists. Through the sustained commitment of the college management and all its stakeholders, Tunga Mahavidyalaya is now recognised as a symbol of excellence and equality.

The college has served more than five decades to the society and the Nation by providing the best learning and teaching opportunities to a large number of students and teachers.

Our college celebrated its Golden Jubilee year in 2018 with huge participation from all students and stakeholders, continuing the long and cherished history of holistic development of students into responsible and morally upright citizens. Tunga Mahavidyalaya is affiliated to Kuvempu University and accredited by NAAC, Bangalore, in its third cycle with B++ grade.

Tunga Mahavidyalaya, with its highly qualified and experienced teaching staff, better infrastructure, fully secured and vibrant eco-campus, well-equipped laboratories, digital library, digital and smart classrooms, and incorporation of e-governance in administration, strives to bring excellence on all fronts. All the modern technical features are added to facilitate the all-round development of the students of our college. The college has achieved remarkable respect and reputation by organising a huge number of student-centric activities and facilities, and continues to take all necessary steps for the further strengthening and achievement of our college students.

The college promotes gender equality through various programmes. Several activities are conducted for the promotion of national values and communal harmony. Environmental consciousness has been an integrated component of college activities. College students are encouraged to participate in programmes to develop social awareness about clean towns and the benefits of a green environment. This has helped in having a natural landscape that predominates the campus with a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna.

The college promotes sports and cultural activities among the students and has been awarded championships at university-level competitions in sports, in both girls' and boys' categories. In cultural competitions it has also won several awards. The college students have been given immense opportunities for extra-curricular activities and participation in activities like Nisarga Sanga, NSS, NCC, Sports, and more. The NSS, NCC, and Sports wings of the college have won several awards at the university, state, and national level competitions, especially in sports.

The college is also making continuous efforts in making necessary changes in the courses offered, according to the needs of the students' community and the changes called for by the development of the economy. Along with traditional courses, the college offers non-formal, short-term courses to interested students in areas like Communication Skills in English, Horticulture, Cartooning, Painting, and Dramatics.

To upgrade the levels of higher education and provide students the opportunity to take up postgraduate studies, the college started the M.Com. course in 2013–14 and has been running the course successfully. With 100% results every year ever since, the department has secured ranks in almost every year.

The students have secured many ranks and achieved impressive glories with their high achievements in academic, co-curricular and sports activities.

In these 55 years of journey, our college has produced Army personnel of higher rank, university rank holders, literary geniuses, state and national sports champions, agriculturists, politicians, actors, lawyers and responsible citizens who continue to serve society.
