The Department of Political Science at Tunga Mahavidyalaya was established in 1967 under the headship of Prof. Seetharama Rao. Political Science is offered as a major subject in the B.A. programme, in combination with History and Economics (HEP).
Prof. Seetharama Rao served the department during its initial years and was succeeded by Prof. Narasimhachar, who retired in 2000. Prof. K. C. Thimmappa Gowda subsequently headed the department and served until his retirement in 2013. The department’s leadership has also included Dr. R. Kumaraswamy. The department encourages students to understand political institutions, democratic processes, constitutional values, and human rights. Its academic activities connect classroom learning with public affairs through student seminars, special lectures, discussions, and community awareness programmes.
A Human Rights Club has been formed within the department to support awareness of human rights and legal literacy. The department has also conducted bridge courses for newly admitted students, remedial classes for students requiring additional support, and enrichment classes for advanced learners.
To develop informed and responsible citizens who understand democratic institutions, uphold constitutional values and human rights, and engage thoughtfully with political and social issues.
Studying Political Science develops an understanding of government, public policy, political institutions, and international relations. It builds analytical, research, and communication skills useful in public service, education, journalism, and community development.
Higher Studies: M.A. in Political Science, Public Administration, International Relations, Public Policy, Development Studies, and programmes in Law or teacher education, subject to eligibility.
