The Department of History at Tunga Mahavidyalaya was established in the academic year 1974–75, with History introduced as one of the major subjects in the B.A. programme. Beginning with fourteen students and one teacher, the department grew with the support of the college management, principals, and faculty to become an important part of humanities education at the institution.
Dr. S. Thimmaiah Naidu played a key role in establishing and developing the department. His research on the seventeenth-century Wodeyars of Mysore earned him a Ph.D. from the University of Mysore in 1989. The department’s academic journey also includes the contributions of Prof. D. S. Somashekar, a writer and artist; Prof. Surya Nayak; and Sri Nanjundappa, who taught in the department from 1976 to 1982 before joining the Karnataka Administrative Service.
Over the years, the department has developed a collection of books, journals, and historical maps to support teaching and learning. Its academic tradition connects the study of history with literature, art, and public service, providing students with opportunities to understand the past and its relationship with society.

Studying History develops skills in research, critical thinking, evidence analysis, and communication. These skills provide a foundation for careers in education, heritage, publishing, tourism, and public service.
