About the Department

The Department of Sociology at Tunga Mahavidyalaya was established in 1967. Since its inception, the department has contributed to the education of generations of students through the study of society, social relationships, and institutions. It offers Sociology as an optional subject in the B.A. programme, along with open elective courses.

Sociology helps students understand the relationship between individuals and society. The study of family, community, culture, inequality, and social change encourages students to examine everyday experiences critically and appreciate the diversity of social life.

The department seeks to maintain a supportive learning environment and encourage more students to pursue Sociology. Its plans emphasise cooperation with the college management and Alumni Association to strengthen student engagement and the department’s academic development.

Career Opportunities

Studying Sociology develops an understanding of human behaviour, social institutions, and community life. It builds research, communication, and analytical skills useful in social development, organisational work, and public service.

Community Development: Supporting community programmes, outreach, and project coordination with NGOs and development organisations.
Social Research: Conducting field surveys, interviews, data collection, and research documentation with appropriate methodological training.
Human Resources: Recruitment support, employee engagement, and training coordination with relevant professional preparation.
Corporate Social Responsibility: Supporting community projects, stakeholder engagement, and documentation of social initiatives.
Social Welfare and Public Service: Programme implementation and community outreach in welfare organisations, or government careers through the relevant recruitment processes.
Teaching and Research: Sociology teaching and academic research after obtaining the required postgraduate qualifications and meeting applicable eligibility requirements.

Higher Studies: M.A. in Sociology, Master of Social Work (MSW), Development Studies, Human Resource Management, Gender Studies, and Public Policy, subject to programme eligibility.
